MAIL

Receiving Internet IMAP mail
Most Internet servers use the POP protocol for your incoming mail, but some use IMAP.

If you're not sure what protocol your organization or Internet service provider (ISP) uses on your Internet mail server, ask the system administrator or call the service provider. You may also be able to tell what protocol is used from your ISP's web site information.

Your IBMR Lotus NotesR connection to your Internet server(s) must be set up for you to receive Internet mail.

IMAP Online or Offline accounts

You can use either an IMAP Online account or an IMAP Offline account for incoming mail.

An IMAP Online account lets you store your mail on the Internet IMAP server, saving space on your local computer. You can access your mail directly on the IMAP server without first downloading (replicating) mail into a NotesR mail application as you do with POP or IMAP Offline incoming mail.

Tip: An IMAP Online account is useful when you want to keep your Internet mail separate from your Notes mail.

When you have an IMAP Offline account, receiving mail requires replicating it to a Notes mail application (either locally or on a DominoR server), as with POP mail. You can store mail both on the IMAP server and in the Notes mail application, or have messages deleted automatically from the IMAP server after they replicate to the Notes mail application.

Tip: An IMAP Offline account is useful when you want to use your Notes mail application as a universal Inbox for all your Notes and Internet mail.

You can secure your IMAP account with SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) for safe transmission over the Internet. For more information, see Securing your POP3, IMAP, LDAP, or NNTP accounts.
