Setting up Notes to search an Internet directory for addresses
You can search remote Internet directories such as Bigfoot for e-mail addresses of people whose names you know. If the Internet directory you use includes more information, you may also be able to determine a person's company, city, phone number, and so on.

The Internet search uses Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) accounts for the directories in your Contacts. IBMR Lotus NotesR adds these accounts to the list in the Directory field of the Select Addresses dialog box that you see when you address mail.

You can set up accounts using the Client Reconfiguration Wizard or set them up manually. Using either method, NotesR automatically creates accounts for the two directories listed in the table below.

Common Internet directories and settings

To set up an Internet directory search using the wizard

1. From anywhere in Notes, click File > Preferences > Client Reconfiguration Wizard.

2. Check Directory server (LDAP) and then click Next.

3. Select an account name (Bigfoot and Verisign will be on the list automatically), and then click Next.

To set up an Internet directory search manually

If you don't want to use the Client Reconfiguration Wizard, you can set up a search manually, using this procedure.

1. From the menu, click File > Mobile > Locations.

2. Click Actions > New > Account.

3. Type a name in the Account name field (Bigfoot, for example).

4. Enter the host name of the LDAP server (for example, ldap.bigfoot.com) in the Account server name field.

5. If the server requires a login name or password, enter them in the Login name and Password fields.

6. Select LDAP in the Protocol field.

7. (Optional) Do either or both of the following:

SSLSelect Enabled to use SSL channel encryption. SSL authentication is not supported. If enabled, the Port number field on the Advanced page automatically changes to 636, the default port for SSL connections. Check with your Internet Service Provider to make sure SSL is required before you enable it.

Only from locationsSelect the locations from which you can search the server or leave the asterisk (*) selected to enable searches from all locations.

8. (Optional) Click the Protocol Configuration tab and do any of the following:

Search timeoutSpecify the maximum time in seconds allowed for LDAP searches. The default is 60 seconds, which should suffice in most cases.
Maximum entries to returnSpecify the maximum number of field entries to return as the result of a search. The default is 100 which should suffice in most cases.
Search baseSpecify where in the server's directory tree to begin searches (for example, c=us,o=acme means country is U.S. and organization is acme). To search the entire directory tree, leave this field blank, unless the server requires an entry in this field.
Check names when sending mailSelect Yes to check names against this server when sending mail.
Use simple search filterSelect Yes to speed your searches by searching only for a cn attribute to locate names.

9. (Optional) Click the Advanced tab and change the port number if necessary.

10. Click Save and Close.

Note: If you cannot connect to an Internet directory, you may behind a network firewall. Contact your DominoR administrator for assistance.
